The Boy in the Forest is a children’s book written by Dustin Glaseman that came alive on the walls of the Kayes Community Gallery in the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba. Displayed alongside Dustin’s tale of magic and whimsy were original illustrations by local artists, bringing to life a woodland world filled with hognittles, treecreakers, frostnips, and a chorus of other creatures.

For my part, I was invited to create a piece inspired by the final page:

“He is a favourite friend, the boy in the forest, and though you might miss him when the woods seem afar, you can seek out his sister in the pools by the sea.” I wanted to capture the ethereal mermaid-like qualities I imagined the sister would have. I painted this underwater scene with my use of bold, eye-catching colours and layered texture.
